We have been seeing increasing organizations that have approached us to come from the non-traditional manufacturing based environment. This includes non manufacturing businesses (eg. health care, financial services, government, non profit) and non manufacturing functions in manufacturing firms (eg. accounts, HR, legal). In the shift of the economy from being manufacturing based to being service based, profitability of organization is derived beyond simply in the effective management of operations on the factory floor. A major portion of the processes, people and technology that determines the success of organizations today lie beyond manufacturing. |

Companies are more attuned to the significance of business process and its management. This has evolved from merely seeing process management as the documentation of processes and procedure manuals. |

The one word of Japanese you should know is muda. This refers to "waste", or simply any activity that requires resources but generates no value. You see this in inventory pile ups, mistakes that require rework, redundant processing steps, movement of employees and transport of materials and goods, workers waiting for their next activity, goods and services that do not meet the needs of the customer; the list goes on. Even for the most casual observer in any organization, muda can be seen everywhere. |
